"It offers the opportunity for change, and so provides hope where sometimes it appears there is no hope"

Generation link

Provision of volunteer grandparents who visit weekly to provide support for isolated families.

The Generation Link Project began in 1993 in response to a need for support for the increasing number of lone parents in Lambeth, many of whom were isolated and had no links with their families of origin.

The aim was to recruit older people as volunteers and to match them with lone parents, to whom they would offer some of the supports expected from a grandparent. The scheme was intended to benefit both sides, as many of the elderly people were also isolated yet had skills to offer.

More recently it has been recognised that natural grandparents can be relatively young these days, so volunteers over 40 are being recruited, as well as from younger volunteers in the form of Mentors.
